Whether you’re a business owner, entrepreneur or a marketer, the likelihood is that want to increase your traffic to your Instagram page. We all do, traffic and attention is what keeps things ticking. Sometimes it can be overwhelming to try and leverage Instagram for traffic, especially due to its narrow traffic options: Instagram story swipe ups and link in bios.

In this particular article we want to take a more detailed look at Instagram’s story swipe up feature.

This is what a swipe up story looks like

What is the Instagram swipe up feature?

Marketers are all too familiar with the fact that Instagram posts don’t allow clickable links, instead you are forced to direct traffic to the available link spot in your bio, which can be frustrating, especially if you’re trying to advertise specific promotions for your brand, or you want to direct your audience to several places. The Instagram story swipe up feature solves just this problem.

When a swipe up link is added to an Instagram story, viewers can simply tap on the arrow at the bottom of their screen or swipe up on the Instagram story to access the link.

So who can use it?

Due to Instagram wanting to keep the feature exclusive, they’ve narrowed down who can use it, and select criteria is required before you can access the feature.

You must either:

  • Have a business account on Instagram with over 10,000 followers

  • Have a verified Instagram page

This means that celebrities and notable brands with less than 10,000 followers and without a business page, can still have access to the swipe up feature as long as they are verified.

How to add a link to your Instagram story

Once you have reached the criteria required to access the Instagram swipe up feature, the link icon will automatically appear at the top of your story editor, as shown below.

Once you click it, the window that allows you to add a link to your Instagram story pops up. Add any link to your website, whether it’s a blog post, a landing page or a piece of curated content you’re sharing with your audience.

This is also where you input information about brand partnerships if you’re sharing content that is sponsored. Tagging your business partner adds a “paid partnership with” label to your story, but it can also limit your ability to edit the Instagram story.

Click the + Web Link section, add your URL then tap Done. You can easily clear or edit your link by tapping the link icon again, or move forward and share your Story with your followers.

From there, you’re good to go, and people watching your story will be able to swipe up and view the web page that the URL you inputted leads to.
